What it means to have a She Code Africa Kigali Chapter

What is She Code Africa?

Founded in Nigeria, She Code Africa is a non-profit organization focused on celebrating and empowering young girls and women in technology across Africa.

The organization holds communication channels and events to further incentivize young women and ladies into technology.
…And now through different representatives, She Code Africa is now in cities and tertiary institutions across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda and Cameroon.

What being a She Code Africa Lead means to me?

I currently project manage at a startup in Kigali and do freelance software projects. As a student in university, learning information technology, I wish I had a community like this on my campus to talk about technology, learn about exciting new tools outside the scope of the curriculum and generally encourage each other as girls on the journey towards our goals as experts in our fields.

Personally, code took a long time for it to click but when it did after my first internship, the urge of wanting to go deeper did not stop in me. I love that feeling of when an error message changes because I know atleast the last bug has been fixed.

Being in the field of technology is a constant learning journey, one with lots of hurdles but which are enjoyable to surmount.

I don't claim to know everything, but they say; "Be the change you want to see in the world" and this is my mine.

Next Steps for She Code Africa Kigali Chapter.

I would love this to be a space where girls fearlessly discuss about their careers, their blockers and what they would like to achieve in the next few years.

Furthermore also having virtual or physical events in which speakers can talk about a specific topic like Vue, React, Laravel, Node, DevOps, Machine learning e.t.c so we can learn from them. Besides that, it would also be great to hold hackathons in a specific field and learn by doing too.
