Why Do I Mostly Get Followed by Newcomers?

Today is the day of my 200th follower! πŸŽ‰

Although I do not specifically seek to have more followers, I'm a bit curious on why they follow me. So I browsed their profiles and discovered that most of them are newcomers.

I'm wondering why. πŸ€”

Furthermore, most of them started to follow me the first day of their dev.to's journey.
Did they google something and then arrive on one of my dev.to's posts?
Or did they search something on dev.to and came across an article of mine?

I would be interested in knowing what pushed them to follow me as I'm myself a newcomer.

So why do you follow me guys? πŸ™‚

The main reason is that we have suggested follows based on your recent activity. If you stay active and contribute to certain tags, you'll show up in onboarding suggestions.

It's been an ongoing source of confusion, we have been wanting to modify onboarding to at least have folks fill out their profiles before they are given some follow suggestions. That way it wouldn't seem like total blank profiles at least.

Yes please! I even think people should fill their profiles (at least a few details) before even being able to follow someone.

Most of my 300-ish followers are completely empty profiles. That's not really an issue but it kinda make the followers list useless, relevant profiles are drowned in empty ones.

Anyway, it's not a problem for me. I was just wondering why. So maybe these people follow the same tags as me and as an active contributor of these tags, I got suggested to them.

Apart from this, I would love having usage statistics of dev.to. I mean, the number of users, the number of active users, the number of users per tag, the number of tags, the tags having the most followers, the users having the most followers per tag, the curve of registration...

Yeah, been wondering for a long time too. I thought I was being followed by dummy accounts. Not that it bothers me. I'm just wondering. Nonetheless, it inspires me to add more content.

My understanding is that new accounts are given a list of people to choose to follow so that they'll have some content to start reading right away.
