Being a developer is fashionable!

True! Everybody wants to be a developer. Never mind if they had studied other careers. Never mind if they are still at the university. In 2020, almost the entire population was pushed to stay at home. Pandemic changed people’s minds. With nothing to do, everybody started to think what to do with their lives. And shit|this happens.

The news is guilty of this fashion. It was written everywhere that developers earn high salary. You can read on the web that if you take a short course, you will be able to get a lot of money working from home. Besides, you could work for companies abroad. In Latam, this means US dollars or Euros in your pocket. However, this is not true nor false.

What on earth is going on?

First of all, it is true that if you take a short course, you know how to make a small landing page. Although you have the knowledge, the experience is missing. If you wanted to be hire as a frontend developer, you would need to practice a lot. From 3 to 6 months after finishing the course is a good beginning.

However, that practice is only good for being a frontend whose job is to become a static design into a responsive web using just HTML and CSS; and perhaps adding some JavaScript copy-pasted to create a simple mobile menu or a carousel. If that was what you have in mind, perfect. But you would need much more than that if you wanted the huge salary you were expecting.
On the one hand, you could specialize in complicated designs. Those pages that everyone talks about, those sites that win many awards because they are beautiful eye-catching and original. Moreover, you could want to be more logical-minded and create those modern sites everybody is using now, reactive pages or simple page applications that look like true software apps.
You would need more than six months for doing that. More than a year, I will say.

On the other hand, perhaps frontend does not suit you. Therefore, you would need another course: Backend. It is difficult to go directly with the backend because when you are writing code you do not have a canvas to see your changes like Frontend. In the beginning it is only plain text; and it is very hard to be such abstract. I believe backend needs more practice than front, but this is different for each person. I have known developers who were the other way around.

Second, you can earn good money with any job. There are lawyers who earn a lot of money and others who don't. This happens with any profession you could imagine. However, only if you are good will you earn a lot of money.

What am I trying to explain with all this?

Being a developer is a small job like any other. If you wanted to be a carpenter, you could take a little course as well. It is the same if your job would be electrician, construction worker or plumber. The courses are never too long. Because if they were 4 or 5 years It would be a university career. In any case, you always need experience. Your first furniture will not be perfect. It will be very difficult to start with a huge cupboard; or being the carpenter for the entire 6 floor new building. It is necessary to start with calm, step by step. As life!
However, if you love what you do, money will come sooner or later.

Are you sure?

Yes! Because if you love what you are doing you will keep learning and developing all the skills you need to do a perfect job. And if you work so well, everybody will want to work with you or to hire you.

Only if you are good... Remember? You just need to practice to be such good!
