How I got into AWS as a Community Builder

Hello all! I'm Delia Ayoko from Cameroon, and this is my first content ever created because I'm new in the DEV Community and I'm excited to share with others how I got the role as AWS Community Builder.

Since 11 years old, I've been passionate about the tech field. At 13, I took part in the Technovation Challenge for girls. I didn't make it to the Regional pitch event. I got in again when I was 14. Same story, didn't get to the top. My only consolation was the T-shirt and the Certificate of participation.

5 years later, my parents kept on urging me to find similar programs and tech opportunities online. So, I gave it a try. Browsing lazily through some blogs one very cold evening, I saw opportunites to apply for Amazon Web Services. I'd never heard of AWS, no idea about cloud computing, but I knew a little about coding. Atleast I'd just began college.

To be honest, I didn't take my application into AWS serious, so I really do not remember what I wrote as essay as to why I wanted to be a Community Builder. What I remember, is that I wrote that essay with my life, as if I knew how serious it would be. I also remember mentioning my participation in Technovation Iridescent for 2 years, and I wrote about the exciting feeling of talking to others because I was valedictorian and Senior Prefect in high school. And I chose my options wisely, without faking my identity. So yeah, I submitted my application and completely forgot about it.

I don't even remember which month I applied, but I received an email on March 4th. I didn't pay attention to that e-mail till the 11th when I finally decided to open the e-mail. First thing I saw was "Hello Delia, Congratulations! You are exactly the kind of person we're looking for and.." Tears filled my eyes. I ran to the living room to tell my mum and my brother, nobody understood. At first, I thought it was a scam or something. AWS hasn't reached my area (Cameroon) and nobody can understand when I share my excitement about AWS. When I got the next e-mail from Jason Dunn on LinkedIn, then I knew it was real. He told gave me my category and my category leader. Then I remembered applying, but I didn't remember the details.

So, I'm enjoying my free Cloud Academy lessons, and I'm excited about connecting with other builders.

Now, I'm just a junior developer who is stuck in the middle of many benefits, and I'll plead on guidance. I'm finding difficulties having a team, and I still need a lot of information about AWS.

Thank you immensely for reading this cliché content. I'll like to connect with you, yes you.
