Facebook Users Have Until August to Claim Share of $725 Million Settlement

Facebook users who wish to participate in the class-action settlement can submit a claim by September 22, 2022. The only way to receive a payment from the settlement is by submitting a timely and completed claim form that is approved by the Settlement Administrator. If approved, users will give up the right to sue Facebook in a separate lawsuit about the legal claims this settlement resolves. Users can also choose to opt-out of the settlement by September 12, 2022, and receive no payment. However, this option allows them to sue Facebook, continue to sue, or be part of another lawsuit against the social media company related to the legal claims resolved by this settlement. Users who wish to object to the settlement can write to the Court by September 12, 2022, explaining their objections and may also file a claim for a payment. Those who do nothing will automatically be part of the settlement and will not get a payment from this settlement, but will give up the right to sue, continue to sue, or be part of another lawsuit against Facebook related to the legal claims resolved by this settlement.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for September 7, and payments will be made to claimants once the court has approved the settlement, assuming there are no appeals. Although Facebook has implemented changes to its policies regarding user data, Meta did not acknowledge any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. In a statement, Meta spokesperson Dina Luce said that the company pursued a settlement because it was in the best interest of its community and shareholders. Luce also highlighted the company's efforts to improve privacy and implement a comprehensive privacy program over the last three years, with a continued focus on building services that prioritize privacy.
