Introducing Dev Volunteer, Join Us in Improving the DEV Community

Hello, wonderful members of DEV Community!

I am super excited to introduce Dev Volunteer-an organization dedicated to maintaining and developing the quality of content at DEV Community. The idea behind it is quite simple: a team of trusted moderators that volunteer their time and energy will be in charge of keeping our platform a place for meaning, worthy insights, and high-quality posts. But in order for one to be part of this organization, we are raising the stakes by setting some standards to make sure the team is top-notch.

What is Dev Volunteer?
Dev Volunteer is a selected group of moderators who will ensure the following:

  • Assure Quality of Content: We'll keep eyes on the quality of posts and flag or moderate those pieces of content that do not contribute to our values.

  • Repost Great Content: If a member creates an amazing post that deserves more visibility, then we will shine it by reposting and amplifying their content.

  • Dev Volunteer: We do this on a volunteer basis because we want to make this platform great for everybody involved.

Who Can Be a Member of Dev Volunteer?
We have set some basic but important terms for a possible membership:

  • You Must be a Moderator: Only current DEV moderators are allowed to apply to Dev Volunteer. Mods are the reason that this community keeps safe and engaging, and this program is going to extend that role.
  • Be a Trusted Member: Most importantly, you need trust and reliability. You have to be a trusted member of the DEV Community already.
  • Expert in One Area: Whether you be a master of JavaScript, a Python wizard, or a UI/UX pro, we require you to have expertise in at least one area.
  • Keep an Eye on Copy-Paste AI Content: Since AI article generation tools are so prevalent today, we expect moderators to recognize fully copy-pasted or otherwise low-effort AI posts that waste the time taken to read them.
  • Be Passionate About Community Growth: If someone who really believes in fostering growth and maintaining the quality of DEV Community, this is the place.

Why Dev Volunteer?
With so many great creators on DEV already, sometimes great posts can slip through the cracks. Dev Volunteer is here to course correct that. Our mission isn't just about moderation; it's about elevation-we want to let the work speak that needs to be spoken.

I'd love to ask, prior to the launch, for permission from the @ben, @jess, and @peter of the DEV leadership if this aligns with the goals and community guidelines of DEV. Ben, Jess, Peter—if you happen to read this, I would really appreciate your input and thoughts!

If you are interested in joining or have any questions, please leave a comment below, or contact me directly.

Looking forward to seeing this initiative scale up, and with this, exactly see how we can make this space even better, together.

Thanks for writing this, will definitely give it some thought.

Of course we have programs like this already but always appreciate more enthusiasm and initiative.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, Ben! I understand there are similar programs already, my hope with Dev Volunteer is to create an additional space where moderators can actively focus on reposting hidden gems from the community and catching low-effort AI content to ensure the quality of the platform stays high.

@shafayeat - If you haven't already I'd encourage you to join the DEV discord where ~450 moderators and trusted members discuss great posts that need a boost, spam spotting, and share our feedback and insights with the admin team.

@shafayeat we definitely appreciate the initiative here but please do not use the official dev logo for the volunteer program, as that can be confusing to members. We have an unofficial logo you can use here: dev.to/brand

Thanks so much
