As a newbie in React.js development, comprehending essential principles and adhering to practicalities are critical in becoming better at developing swiftly. Whether you are working on a straightforward task like building a beginner todo app or a more complex project like establishing an e-commerce platform – following fundamental essentials will help you write overwhelming code that can be effortlessly maintained as the business demands it.
With the modular architecture, performance optimizations, and extensive community support, React has revolutionized the way create web applications are built. However, for beginners, React can be quite overwhelming, and it's easy to get frustrated and even give up in the sea of concepts, tools, and best practices.
In this article, I have carefully curated fundamental practices which can help increase your productivity X10. Are you building a simple todo app or a complex e-commerce platform? Following these best practices is highly imperative to write clean, maintainable, and scalable code, and avoid common pitfalls and mistakes.
1. Keep your components small and reusable
A good rule of thumb is to follow the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) and ensure your components are responsible for only one thing. For example, you could create a separate component for each input field, such as username, password, and email address. By keeping components small and reusable, you can easily test them, debug them, and maintain them in the long run.
Example snippet
import React from 'react';
function InputField({ type, name, placeholder }) {
return (
<div>
<label htmlFor={name}>{name}</label>
<input type={type} id={name} name={name} placeholder={placeholder} />
</div>
);
}
export default InputField;
2. Break Down the UI into Components
Breaking down the UI into components is a fundamental practice in React development. It involves identifying distinct parts of your user interface and creating separate components for each part. This approach helps in organizing your codebase, making it easier to understand, maintain, and modify. By creating reusable components, you can efficiently reuse them across different parts of your application.
import React from 'react';
// Example component for a user profile
const UserProfile = () => {
return (
<div>
<h1>User Profile</h1>
<img src="avatar.jpg" alt="User Avatar" />
<p>Name: John Doe</p>
<p>Email: john.doe@example.com</p>
</div>
);
};
// Example component for a navigation bar
const NavigationBar = () => {
return (
<nav>
<ul>
<li>Home</li>
<li>About</li>
<li>Contact</li>
</ul>
</nav>
);
};
// Example usage of the components
const App = () => {
return (
<div>
<UserProfile />
<NavigationBar />
</div>
);
};
export default App;
In the example above, the UI is broken down into two separate components: UserProfile
and NavigationBar
. Each component is responsible for rendering a specific part of the UI, making it easier to understand and manage the code. The components can be reused in different parts of the application, promoting code reusability.
3. Use React DevTools
React DevTools is a browser extension that allows you to inspect and debug React components. You can see the hierarchy of your components, inspect their props and state, and even modify them in real-time. For example, if you have a bug in your code, React DevTools can help you identify the source of the problem and make it easier to fix it.
import React, { useState } from 'react';
function Counter() {
const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
const handleIncrement = () => {
setCount(count + 1);
};
const handleDecrement = () => {
setCount(count - 1);
};
return (
<div>
<H2>Count: {count}</H2>
<button onClick={handleIncrement}>Increment</button>
<button onClick={handleDecrement}>Decrement</button>
</div>
);
}
export default Counter;
4. Keep Components Small and Single-Purpose
Aim to create components that have a clear responsibility and perform one specific task or functionality. By following this practice, you improve the maintainability, reusability, and testability of your codebase. If a component becomes too large or complex, it's recommended to break it down into smaller, more focused components, making the code easier to understand and maintain
import React from 'react';
// Example component for displaying a user's name
const UserName = ({ name }) => {
return <h1>Welcome, {name}!</h1>;
};
// Example component for displaying a user's email
const UserEmail = ({ email }) => {
return <p>Email: {email}</p>;
};
// Example component for the user profile
const UserProfile = ({ user }) => {
return (
<div>
<UserName name={user.name} />
<UserEmail email={user.email} />
</div>
);
};
// Example usage of the components
const App = () => {
const user = {
name: 'John Doe',
email: 'john.doe@example.com',
};
return <UserProfile user={user} />;
};
export default App;
5. Use PropTypes or TypeScript
React allows you to define the type of props that a component should receive using PropTypes or TypeScript. Using these tools can help you catch errors early and ensure that your code is robust and maintainable. For example, if you have a component that requires a specific prop type, using PropTypes or TypeScript can help you avoid type-related bugs and provide better documentation for your components.
Example snippet on PropTypes
import React from 'react';
import PropTypes from 'prop-types';
function Person({ name, age, email }) {
return (
<div>
<H1>{name}</H1>
<p>Age: {age}</p>
<p>Email: {email}</p>
</div>
);
}
Person.propTypes = {
name: PropTypes.string.isRequired,
age: PropTypes.number.isRequired,
email: PropTypes.string.isRequired,
};
export default Person;
Example snippet on TypeScript
import React, { useState } from 'react';
interface CounterProps {
initialValue: number;
}
function Counter({ initialValue }: CounterProps) {
const [count, setCount] = useState(initialValue);
const handleIncrement = () => {
setCount(count + 1);
};
const handleDecrement = () => {
setCount(count - 1);
};
return (
<div>
<h1>Count: {count}</h1>
<button onClick={handleIncrement}>Increment</button>
<button onClick={handleDecrement}>Decrement</button>
</div>
);
}
export default Counter;
Conclusion
React newbies will benefit from considering a range of proven effective best practices that can heighten productivity while improving codebase organization. These may include modularizing components into digestible building blocks that can be easily reused across an application via importing or simpler duplicity; integrating resourceful aid technologies such as React DevTools either via browser extensions or within Chrome's Developer Tools UI; taking advantage of valuable CSS capabilities through packages like "styled-components" or "Emotion"; utilizing TypeScript's static typing for more efficient error management in larger projects involving Union types; among other wise implementation choices that can be honed over time.
These practices will help you become an efficient and effective React developer. By keeping your components small and reusable, using JSX correctly, following the one-way data flow, using React DevTools, using a CSS-in-JS library, using React hooks, and using PropTypes or TypeScript, you can write clean, maintainable, and scalable React applications.

Thank you
Wow
Very good input. Thank you Marin
You made a lot of good points but the example on keeping components small and single purpose felt like overkill. I'd rather just have the
h1
andp
tags in the UserProfile component. This doesn't mean you shouldn't make components small but making them too small becomes another issue.Awesome point there Seun.
Thank you for throwing more light on that
Can make a post about Increasing productivity in Perl?
Yes I will do that.
I wish had possibility to read this post at the beginning of my journey with react.
I’m glad you like it Matek🙌
Shouldn't it be
setCount(count=>count-1)
?In this case, the setCount function is taking another function which takes the cout as a param and return a decreased count by 1.
Which is kind of passing a redundant method to the setCount function.
You can simply pass the new value of count as an argument to the SetCount when calling it
