Everything you need to know about Hacktoberfest 2023 (and why there are no free t-shirts?)

Let’s Unpack Hacktoberfest:
A Month of Open Source Fun!
Every October, techies and non-techies alike come together for a unique challenge called Hacktoberfest. It’s not just about coding; it’s about making the world of open-source a better place. Plus, you get some nifty rewards along the way! 🎁

And guess what? This year, it’s the 10th anniversary, so it’s going to be extra special! 🔥

“Hacktoberfest is a month-long celebration of open source software.” — DigitalOcean

👾 How to Join the Party
Step 1: Head over to https://hacktoberfest.com/ between September 26 and October 31. Sign up — it’s as easy as pumpkin pie.

Step 2: Start contributing! You can make Pull Requests (PRs) on GitHub. Need help finding cool projects to contribute to?

Here’s a cool trick go to the search bar of GitHub and directly search for “hacktoberfest accepted” or “hacktoberfest 2023”. An entire list of projects subjected to hacktoberfest will appear in front of you with basic description and you can explore on your own where you want to make the contributions.

**🏆 What’s in It for You? — Prizes, of course!
**The deal is simple: make 4 successful contributions, and you’re in the running for some cool rewards.

**But, here’s the twist for 2023 — no t-shirts 😭.
**They say it’s because handling all those shirts got too complicated. Instead, you’ll get a digital reward kit and, if you’re one of the first 50,000 with an accepted PR, a tree will be planted in your name through Tree Nation (that’s still pretty awesome 🌱🌎).

📚 Rules of the Game
Your own Pull Requests count, even if they’re in the same repository.
Contributions should be in a project with the ‘hacktoberfest’ topic option. And even your PR’s also must be labelled for the same. If it’s not, politely ask the maintainer to add the ‘hacktoberfest-accepted’ label.

  • You’ll get a notification in your Hacktoberfest profile as your PR’s gets accepted. And you will be getting badges as well for your contribution.
  • Just 4 PRs for the win.
  • Your PRs must be created between October 1 and October 31.

DO THIS OR I WILL BE SAD 🥺
It would be great if you can share this with your friends or your previous experience in hacktoberfest in the comments so others can learn the importance of open source contributions.
