It's January, it's a new year, it's a great time to get a website up and running. (All months are good for this actually but you get the idea.) In this post we'll run through three easy steps to getting your own personal website going:
- Remixing a Glitch website
- Buying a domain
- Pointing the domain at the website
1. Grab a Glitch remix
You can create loads of different app types on Glitch just by remixing an existing project. Here's a simple template for a personal website – hit the Remix button to get your own!
🎨 Use the info inside the project to make some edits to your new website!
If you don't fancy this one there are plenty more to choose from at glitch.new and the Discover page.
2. Buy your own domain
OK so you have a website now and can share the link with people, why would you need a domain of your own? We get into the reasons in the previous post but TL;DR it gives you control over how you represent yourself online – maybe you'll want to move your site away from Glitch in future!
Use Domainr to find your new domain:
- Visit Domainr.com
- Search for keywords, like your name, to see available options
- When you see one you like, click through to buy it from a registrar (if it's also at a price that you like 🤑)
Stay logged into your registrar account, because you'll be editing the settings for your domain in the next step.
3. Point your domain at your website
Now you just need to put the pieces together and point the domain at your Glitch site!
Follow the steps in our tutorial – it's completely free including TLS for two domains:
What you'll be doing:
- Signing up for a free Fastly account
- Creating a CDN service, with your Glitch website as the origin
- Setting up a TLS certificate for your domain
- Pointing the domain at your Fastly service in your registrar account
Tell the world!
Tell your friends, share on social media, post here in the comments, don't keep your new site a secret!
