First: if you know Python and are automating stuff, you're already programming and developing software.
Second: if your company is a PHP shop, then you have 3 choices:

I think, that in this case it would still make sense to learn some PHP. Then you might be even more convincing as you could tell people about the benefits of Python as opposed to PHP ;)
