Alternative ways to organize meetups

I am one of the organizers of Vuejs//Berlin, one of the biggest Vuejs meetups when looking at the member statistics, and we are relying to the largest extent on Meetup.com for scheduling and community management. I'm pretty sure, we would never have reached the same level of visibility without the platform.

But I always wondered: Is there more? Are there alternatives, other larger meetups use, to not solely rely on one platform?

Sure, there are other meetup-like platforms, but they don't work for us, because the effort-to-visibility ratio is terrible.
