Kettlebells & Code: Dev Health

As tech workers, we sit down quite a bit during the day. I have a standing desk that helps me stretch out a bit or lets me dance for a while (yes, desk dancing is a thing if you weren't aware), but we need to move more.

I'm generally active. I work out Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, along with a long daily walk, and do other seasonal activities.

If you don't get up to much and are curious about a fitness regime, you may want to come to hang out with Anna Nettles and me tomorrow. Even if you're already pretty active, you may also enjoy it.

I'm super excited to do a live stream with her where she will put me through a fantastic workout. Anna is a certified personal trainer, so I know I'll be in good hands. Come work out with us if you're up for it from the comfort of your home or wherever you're tuning in.

Aside from pumping some iron, she'll answer personal fitness questions while I'm sweating away, and we will also discuss her journey into tech.

Anna is a career transitioner who landed her first job in tech recently! It's a tough job market out there right now, especially for early career devs, so I'm excited to hear about Anna's job search and what she did to land her first gig.

It should be fun, and you all get to see me ugly sweat on Twitch, lol.

Come hang with us tomorrow, Wednesday, August 9th, at 5 pm UTC!

Update August 9, 2023: Here's some highlights from the stream!

P.S.: Yes I tagged this post with #healthydebate (channeling my inner dad jokes)

P.P.S.: I'd love to hear what you get up to to stay active! Drop a comment with what you get up to!

Running (5/6 times a week on a training program), commuting on bike : excellent for "background thought processing", while still thinking about work/code.

Climbing (around 2 times a week): require a lot of focus, totally clears the mind. Very different effect on both mind and body.

All of that keeps me fit for when there is snow and get as many turns as possible, wether I climb on a lift or skin to the top! Because let's be honnest, the whole point of coding is just to get money to go snowboarding, of course.

I like to "micro-dose" movement during the workday. I work with a pomodoro timer and I use the 5 min break to stand up, move, grab some water etc. I keep my yoga mat rolled out behind my desk to make it easier to jump into some quick movement.

I also take time for a walk outdoors during my lunch break. It's essential to keep the problem-solving part of my brain running for the whole day.

I work out mostly every day. Even with kids it is hard for me not hit the bars or kettlebells. I use YouTube videos to guide me through workouts. Usually it takes me 30 minutes after or before work. It brings me down and I could easily say without that I would not perform anymore, as parent and as a programmer.

Coming back to this, remind me of my past idea. While the topic may not be strictly related to coding, it's compelling to consider how physical activities like cardio can be transformed into sustainable energy sources. For example, the concept of energy-harvesting tiles has already been explored. However, it's surprising that we haven't seen similar innovations with gym equipment like weights. This untapped avenue could particularly resonate with fitness enthusiasts and gym rats and could even offer financial rewards through sponsored digital currencies or e-wallets. Just imagine a world where the energy you spend lifting weights (even your PRs) not only benefits your physical health but also contributes to sustainable energy generation. It almost like a game but it could be our future.

I'm on a training program that has me on the bike 5 days per week, and in the weight room twice a week. I solve a lot of problems in my zen state while I ride, and the improvements I get in strength and mood is phenomenal. In the winter, I'll snowboard and rock climb (indoors), which are a different sort of exercise, but definitely more of that zen headspace that I'm after.
