The most obvious answer here is logging what happens and where the request for change originated.
Alternatively, you could write a monitoring utility, that would monitor changes to the balance in time and alerted on suspicious activity.
The question is very broad though and in my opinion would benefit of additional context. What is the project you are building, and what are its specifics?
