How to Automate Software Development Processes

As a project manager with several years of experience, I have seen firsthand the evolution of workflow management.

For example, in the past, notifications from different development teams were a constant distraction. I remember sifting through endless emails and updates, each requiring manual attention. This was a time-consuming process that often led to bottlenecks in project timelines. Everything needed my attention at once, and I just could not find a moment to focus. If I wanted to ‘automate’ something, I had to create extensive SOPs and train staff in the processes, which took time I just did not have while trying to balance my day-to-day.

Fast forward to today, where technology has revolutionized this aspect of project management. Automation has taken over the tedious task of managing notifications

For example, I can set triggers in our project management tool for specific project phases, like post-production, and under conditions that, when met, automatically notify relevant team members.

Successful automations involve just three main components: trigger, condition, and action.

  • A trigger is an event that starts the automation, like a status update or item creation.
  • Conditions specify criteria that must be met for the automation to activate, often refining the trigger event.
  • Actions are tasks executed once triggers and conditions align, such as moving items or sending notifications.

5. Automate Deployment to Accelerate Product Delivery
