I came to know about hacktoberfest through internet surfing and that too on Oct 8, so I decided to give it a try and start my open source journey from here. I registered and successfully completed it too.
Since it was my first time contributing to open source, I have absolutely no idea about what PR’s are and how to make them. What I can only understand is I have to make at least 4 PR’s. But, thanks to youtube and github, I learnt how to contribute. I installed git bash and learnt some basic commands to fork repo, to add and commit changes, push them to the main branch, etc.
At first, I faced a lot of issues while contributing. Somehow resolving those issues I learnt a lot and made my first PR but it was an excluded project then I made another, it shows ‘not yet accepted’ and another and so on. Now, the status of most of the PR’s shows ‘not yet accepted’. It was quite disappointing.
Finally, on Oct 18, I got an email- “merged #17 into main”. This cheers me up. Now I am more confident and hopeful towards completion of this challenge. It made me feel “I’m on the right path and I can do it” and encourage me to contribute more, so I made more PR’s.
Although only four of my PRs' were able to pass 14 days review period and got accepted. But, they were worth it because, 'learning is more important than any other thing'. I received a mail for successful completion of the hacktoberfest 2021 challenge and that made my day.
It was quite an amazing experience. Now I am super excited to get my hacktoberfest 2021 t-shirt and looking forward to more open source contribution opportunities.
