It's This For That

The post in the cover image screenshot showed up in my LinkedIn feed. Here's what I commented:

Which one? In the cringiest "it's like this for that" format, to avoid giving away too much:

  • It's Zoom for intimacy.
  • It's Ring for coffee.
  • It's Wix for everything.
  • It's (a tiny part of) Snapchat for dining.
  • It's a product lab for developer education and societal/criminal justice reform and underprivileged/underrepresented opportunity and bucking industry obsession with degrees (actually, it's exactly that, but that's not telling half of the story).

In one sentence (for each, feel free to share multiple), what's yours? Something you're actually working on or just an idea you've got on the back burner (trust me, I have plenty of the latter including some in here), it doesn't matter.

While you don't have to use my "it's like this for that" format, it's a pretty fun exercise and might help you avoid giving away too many details.

For those of you who noticed "one of these things is not like the others," there's a reason I went so crazy on that one.

I don't believe diversity initiatives, or waiting on politicians to do the right thing, or welfare initiatives, or me screaming, "Degrees tell you nothing about a developer!" are going to affect the kind of change I'm aiming for. I DO believe your character, reasoning mind, and work ethic are the only attributes that determine what you're capable of, that people deserve second chances (or in many cases got swept up in the legal system for laws which shouldn't exist in the first place), that only a positive and plausible vision of a way forward can truly get you there, and that your intelligence is far more than a framed piece of paper on a wall.

And I believe the only way to truly affect change which enables these things is to change perceptions at the societal level. If you think you can and would like to help, hit me up.

I've got a meeting tomorrow with a dev instructor who shares a lot of my vision (including the insanity of doing meetings on Sundays, apparently), about his project and how my ideas might align with it.

I've got a lot of lofty ideas myself, but I know I'm going to need input and assistance from others. His and my visions are currently focused on domestic education and opportunity, but I definitely think it's something which could be expanded (or replicated) across borders.
