Hello everyone, I'm Charlotte, I'm currently doing a 6-months bootcamp to become a web dev! I ended up here because I want to learn more and read more about tech news, languages such as PHP, JS, Ruby, etc. By the way, I'm looking for a traineeship in Amsterdam to start in December! My favourite non-coding hobby is probably music (not playing, more gigs and listening)! Cheers!

Hi Charlotte. I think there's a strong correlation between having an appreciation of music and being interested in code. My degrees were in music, and now I'm a developer. I used to think I'd had an unusual journey, but I keep meeting people who've come into the industry the same way!

I was inspired to join this community by @andreasklinger 's tweet sharing dev.to went opensource. I enjoy writing software for multiplayer collaboration: I love building the tech that makes building Google-docs easier. I work a lot with GraphQL, extending it for pub/sub state distribution.

Fun fact about me: after starting an office-less, fully-distributed company I'm having a hard time imagining ever working in an office again. I value the flexibility and focus over the social atmosphere.

Fun second fact: the late musician Prince used to live with my parents, and my dad wrote a book about the experience

You're too kind. Thank you.

We all work remotely. Currently there are 5 of us:

  • I'm in Los Angeles, CA
  • My co-founder is in Brooklyn, NY
  • We have a developer in San Diego, CA
  • We have another designer and developer in Dallas, TX
  • And a designer in Zagreb, Croatia

We work hard to make it work. Having the personal flexibility to work when we want, where we want is important to us. We work on 3 different teams, Growth (Marketing and Sales), Product (Design, Implementation, Support and Testing), ExCo (Finance, Legal, and Human Resources). One key is having a fixed cadence for all of our teams. We start each week with a Structured check-in meeting to discover if any of us are blocked on anything and setup ad-hoc meetings if we need to jam together. If something gets real harry, we might fly to visit one another. But that happens maybe 3X per year.

There are a growing number of these sorts of companies: Invision, Zapier, Hot Jar, and so many more.

What tools/technologies do you like to use?

Collapse

My development environment is a mix/match of VSCode w/ vim and docker(compose).
I learn/use whatever is expected of me, or when new tech comes out(right now a laravel/react stack).
I create a list of what i'd like to explore like "kotlin" and "reason".

What takes up most of my time now is reading about domain-driven design and microservices.
And I do like to read theory/patterns more than I like new libraries and other tech hype(because there's something new everyday).

Thread Thread

iam_timsmith profile image

Nice! I played around with Laravel and built a web app with it. It was kind of cool. I just went with Vue to keep things simple. I prefer React and I’m learning Node and Express and then I want to rebuild the app using that stack.

Thread Thread

mfoman profile image
mfoman

Laravel intergrates well with Vue as well, so no wonder!
At some point I will try to make something in Vue, but feel I like i don't have the time for it at the moment.

Also a part of the reason is I've yet to try frameworks such as GatsbyJS/Next.js which was developed with reactjs/nodejs in mind.
They focus more on server-rendered and isomorphic components in which I find interesting/confusing.

And I'm about to get in the mindset of Reasonml, the new language also built with React in mind.

Btw, if there's anything I can help with don't shy away from asking - I feel I learn the most by interacting with people other coders.

Thread Thread

iam_timsmith profile image
Tim Smith

I built my portfolio site using Gatsby and the NetlifyCMS. It's pretty cool. Gatsby actually doesn't interact with a database. It just creates static files on the HTML build and those sit on the server, so I liked it a lot when I was starting with React. It essentially allowed me to build a React app with "dynamic" information but no back-end. If you want to check out out, I put the links to the site and the code below.

I liked the idea behind laravel, but I prefer Javascript to PHP so I want to get into Sailsjs or something like that. It just creates an MVC architecture for the Nodejs app. Sailsjs is built on top of Expressjs.

Thread Thread

mfoman profile image
mfoman

Sounds great, thanks for clarification.

Regarding persistence: You might be interested in tech like, I think it's called cosmicjs, a kinda headless cms.

I don't really like the php syntax either, but I do like the "flexibility" even though many "real devs" would disagree.

Thread Thread

iam_timsmith profile image
Tim Smith

Yeah, my initial complaint was the "halt the site comes to" when it loads because it uses a single-threaded setup. Then it was just kind of a pain to have to change gears between php, html, css, and js all the time. Setting things up initially and then just using Sass and JS makes things much more enjoyable to me.

I've spent time looking at headless CMSs(?) but surprisingly haven't come across CosmicJS. I'll give that a look. So far I like NetlifyCMS, and I've played around with Wordpress, Cockpit, Directus, Strapi, and a few others.

Thread Thread

mfoman profile image

I think it's relatively new too.
You mentioned Strapi, maybe sanity.io/?
Look promising, but never tried it personally.

I wanted to get started(properly) with something based on firebase.

Thread Thread

iam_timsmith profile image

Part of the challenge is finding one of these that will work well for clients. If I need to update something, none of these would be a problem. I feel that the layout and maybe some of the terminology could be problematic for a client who isn't super tech-savvy. That is one big benefit to Wordpress is predefined fields. On my to-do list is trying Wordpress as a headless CMS using the rest api they offer.

Thread Thread

mfoman profile image
mfoman

Just remembered I had something else contentful.com/.
I'll leave it to you to figure them out, it's a little too much for me :p

Thread Thread

iam_timsmith profile image
Tim Smith

I've looked at it but haven't played around with it yet. Mostly I'm just looking for non-techie CMS which allows me to build a front-end using javascript using an api. I mean, I guess either I'll find one I like or I'll just build it eventually lol.

Hi everybody. I am syed meesam ali. I'm professionally a civil engineer but was always interested in programming and started with Visual Basic to program a simple structural system (civil engineering related). I developed more interest in programming when i started using VBA in Excel to automate various tasks and found out that almost anything can be automated with programming. Used MATLAB sometime to also program basic stuff related to engineering. Recently I developed deeper interest for Python due to my interest in big data analysis as well as AI. I have taken many courses from edX and still continuing my learning primary from edx as well as some UDEMY courses. Currently devoting myself to learn in-depth JavaScript as a front-end developer as well as enhance my Python knowledge and looking forward for ways to bring my multiple interests into something composite.

Programming literacy I strongly believe is a super must for future learning in any field. I also am currently teaching VBA for Excel to some students and in future want to develop courses in programming to teach in the most simplest ways.

I am trying to maintain my own Excel advanced page on facebook at: facebook.com/exceladvanced/

I want to be more active in programming and really would love to be part of any active community where people encourage and help each other reaching higher levels of experience and understanding.

I am learning full stack web development. Trying to cram all of that code into my tiny little brain in 12 months. Wish me luck. I decided to learn web development because I realised I had a passion for it. It started with the idea of blogging and creating websites through wordpress. I wanted to make it more personal, but then when I started looking into what makes a website I wanted to create it. Three months into my course :)

It is very difficult to list all of my hobbies, there are too many and I have been saying for a while that I need to cut them down. There are too many excellent things to like and do.

I look forward to reading some more articles.

Hi, all! I'm Lucy from the USA, and after I got my BS/IT degree I started as a tester/documenter. I tracked test results in dBASE III, and then my boss brought me a new tool - Access, and it was Windows-based - ooh! I then went through VBA and VB and have been working in C#/WinForms and C#/MVC for a few years. I still love solving puzzles as a career, and getting to help make other people's jobs easier so they can go home on time.

When I'm not coding, I sing with a local women's chorus. Now I'm the music librarian, and have build a Windows application that tracks seasons, songs, singers, attendance, and who has what copies of which songs. I've also started an MVC app for the same data, so I can take attendance on my phone. Sooo... what is this "non-coding" you speak of? :)

I don't get to program as much as I like, but it's still great to be in the thick of things, and help out my devs when they need it.

I joined dev.to mostly because I have been enjoying the content everyone makes and wanted to be a part of the community.

For the non-coding hobby it used to be video games, but now it's helping my autistic son learn to talk.

Hey everyone!

I am slowly learning webdev in my free time and would love to transition into a developer role one day.

I used to blog about iPhone apps and games as well as Jailbreak tweaks. I also ran a Jailbreak news podcast for a while, which is sort of what got me into webdev.

After using WordPress for a while I began to crave more. A friend turned me on to jekyll and I’ve been playing around with it since.

Currently trying to focus on the basics and get a good foundation with semantic HTML5 and CSS3, then I plan on moving to SAAS/ SCSS then move on to JavaScript (which confuses the F out of me).

Hi everyone, Abderrazzak from Morocco, I am an aspiring android and front end developer, I want to be the kind of code-guy that designers love to work with if I dont become a designer myself. Some interesting facts about me include: I speak four languages (Arabic, French, English and another one that you arent probably familiar with, called Berber or Amazigh language lmgtfy.com/?q=Berber+language ). Another fact is that I only had access to internet less than two years ago (Morocco still is a third country), but I am already sick of consuming, I would like to create and build something that can be valuable. I watch some Anime and I love kevin Hart. Would have liked to write more about myself .. but less is more ... I am always open to questions and also if you want to help me please fell free to do it.

Hello!

A buddy sent me the Open Source announcement, congrats dev.to!

I am trying to learn some new languages, my dev background is web HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript and now I have tried: Bash, Rust, Python2/3 (PI), C++ (Arduino), Docker and converted fully to Linux. I do have interest in learning about WASM, especially with Rust (I found rust hard but very satisfying when Rustc compiles). Currently I am taking a stab at GraphQL and building a personal development environment via docker. I still have a desire to stay with JavaScript in some way as the ECMAScript changes have been really exciting and I enjoy watching the language and community grow. That's why I decided to try Rust, the community is so talented, helpful and humble; all while some very exciting things happening within the Rust ecosystem.

When I am not coding, I am playing guitar, gaming (DotA2 - I am not good at it though) or BBQ'ing.

Cheers,

Doug Hall

Hello. I'm Doug from Montgomery, AL. I've been learning to program for going on -- oh heck, my brain hurts to do the math. I first learned to program on my Dad's Epson QX-10. I used dBase II to help me track and bill my lawn care customers. At the time, I never considered it a career option. It was more of a necessity, albeit a fun one. In college, I cut my teeth programming on 80 column punch cards and quickly moved on to green and amber 80-column ASCII monitors like my Dad's computer had. At the time, 5MB of storage was considered half-decent. I was the Apple Student Representative at Auburn University for my last two years there. I bought 150 shares of Apple back when they were virtually penny stocks. I sold them all WAAAY too soon. So much for my career in financial counseling. :-/

After college, I did a year and a half stint for a private contractor, writing logistics software for the Standard Systems Center (the government), using C, Pro*SQL, and sprinkling in a little PCL for printing forms on HP laser printers. After that, I was hired to teach Ada for a workforce development agency. I wound up never teaching that class, because our requirements changed, but I stayed on with them and became their database programmer. I've now been using a database language (really, an integrated system) called 4th Dimension or "4D", 4d.com/. I use a third-party plugin called Active4D for web development. I have learned several other languages over the years. I've only used a handful of them for production code, however. I've enjoyed short (and fruitless) forays into WebObjects, Java, Spring. More recently, I've used Ruby and Rails for a few projects at work. Right now, I'm learning Elixir and Phoenix as well as Vue.js and friends. My day job still pays me to do 4D, and I'm quite fond of eating, so I don't have the time I'd like to really get productive with them.

For my next career, I'm considering writing my biography on every computer-related forum in existence -- without copy and paste. It probably won't pay much, but like everything else, I'll monetize it later. People will be mesmerized.

Mr.I

Hi! Sam here — somewhat of a hybrid between teacher, programmer and small time entrepreneur.

After dabbling with code in my previous job, which was hardware based, I was bitten by the code monkey because I swiftly grew the desire to learn more. To quench the thirst, I combined a BSc in Computing at University with a web / graphic design startup: cutting my teeth with web technologies, ultimately build my first real app with Angular1 - theinterestgame.com/#!/landing.

Learning was fun but even more so, was helping my fellow students so I opted to combine the two disciplines and teach Computer Science — Next stop: London!

In the capital I trained to teach to 11 - 18 year olds to code — no easy feat but Kings College London is well known for it’s ability to train teachers and I was given the opportunity to learn from some of the leading researchers and teachers on the scene.

A gruelling but rewarding training year took place in mixed, all boys and all girls schools and, hey presto, a year later and my first ‘proper’ year teaching was in the ‘UK School of the Year’! Woo!

During this year, I taught selection statements, iteration, functions and data structures, as well as help the older students with projects ranging from: simple data input programs with Python + SQL to a tamagotchi style dog game with Unity!

Many students showed interest so I kept the keenos engaged with an after school code club. I enjoyed being the the students but still felt like there was something a little wrong — although the education system was (and still is) heading in the right direction, there is a definite void between what the students are asked to learn and the skills needed for a career!

Right now I’m doing less teaching and more networking and more React(ing).

Being (relatively) new to both programming and teaching, I’m hoping to write some beginners posts on what I’m learning: currently, the wonderful React 😊

Very much hoping to connect with the community to bridge the gap between education and communities like these, which in my humble opinion, should be intertwined.

Looking forward to both connecting and hearing your thoughts on what / how to teach tomorrow’s generation.

At your service,

Sam aka Mr.I

Developer, developers, developers! Howdy. I'm Angel, C# developer, born/raised in Mexico City but living now in Tokyo.

I've been following dev.to twitter account for long time but today I decided to create an account and see if I can participate more actively, I am about to start a new challenge in a big company, and I need to update some (most) of my technical skills, my problem is that I stop developing for several years because I was doing only on project/product/program management, when I move here, I start again doing "Software Engineering", now I'm interested in AWS/Azure, no-sql, high-availability, Visual Studio Code, .NET Core, so I'm reading about that some books, some videos on pluralsight, and blogs. too much to learn!!!, and I'm still want to finish my preparation for PMP. but no time...

In my free time, I enjoy this city and looking for good beer and food in a beautiful beach with my future wife.

Hello, not sure how I’ve stumbled in here! I’ve been programming since my teens, and my favorite programming projects all revolve around web publishing and Linux.

My favorite language these days is Racket (a LISP). My current project is a system that prints beautiful books and websites from the same source. Just recently I’ve found I really like Fossil more than git.

I have two small children and live near Minneapolis in a house I built myself (it took three years). If I had time for more hobbies I’d go back to fingerstyle guitar and calligraphy!

Hi everyone! My name is Fran, I’m a Software Engineering student (in my last year) from Spain. I’m also currently working full-time as a .NET developer in my company, mainly doing web stuff, so my everyday languages are mostly C#, JavaScript, HTML/CSS and some SQL here and there.

Lately I’ve been getting more and more attracted to functional programming, so I’ve been messing around with Elm a little bit, though I don’t like the approach they took with HTML so I’m searching for another functional language that I can use for my next personal project. So far I’m thinking about just applying functional concepts to JavaScript and using Lodash and Vue/Vuex, if anyone knows any better alternative, feel free to reach me!

Aside from coding my main hobby is music, I play the guitar and sing and I’m currently playing in a band!
Thank you all for this wonderful community, I found it when it was made open source and I can’t stop reading it ever since. I can’t wait to contribute more!

G'day! I'm Dan from Melbourne Australia and I'm trying to work out if 46 is too old to try and be a halfway decent developer. I've got a background in communications and marketing, and I'm pretty keen on WordPress. Ultimately I'd like to be able to develop kick arse themes that I could, you know, SELL, and make a living from... but maybe that dream is a bit old now.
Anyway, I've been doing coding my nubs off since Jan and I have done a fair few online courses about HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WordPress and next month I start a BootCamp on JavaScript for WordPress with Zac Gordon. I've been here for a while but I didn't know about this thread until I got an email update so here I am introducing myself. Look at me go!
My favourite thing in the whole world right now is Visual Studio Code and pushing lessons to GitHub via Git and the integrated Terminal, I figure if that was a job I could do, I would be really good at it.

Hi All,
Just relocated from San Jose, Ca where I held product management positions over the last 20 years. Now, I have reconnected with my software engineering past, learnt Python and fundamental data science and moved to rural Maine. (Internet speed = 100/10)

Joined dev.to for collegial discussions about the work I am doing and how some of us may collaborate over time to help achieve our goals by sharing knowledge.

Currently, I am building apps to deliver live dashboards of predictive (and some not so predictive) analytics using Dash/Plot.ly, SciKitlearn, Tensorflow, Deep Neural Networks and other Machine-Learning concepts.

This is massive for me since I left the daily grind. Now I am the only force pushing myself forward so your poking, prodding and guidance as a community will be refreshing.

Hi, all. I'm a scientist who studies thunderstorms/tornadoes using numerical models and supercomputers (link). Most of the coding I do involves managing data from these simulations. I've created a simple file system (made up of HDF5 files) for my simulations that works very well. It involves using lossy floating point compression, something that is needed in this exascale age... too much data!

I found my way here because I tend to lurk a lot in the geek groups :) and I have benefited (and continue to benefit) from open source software. I am going to open source the code that I'm working on in my research soon, as it could be useful for other people doing high throughput numerical modeling on supercomputers.

My favorite non coding hobby would probably be listening to music on my stereo - kind of old school here, I still spin vinyl and enjoy vacuum tubes, and streaming has gotten to CD quality and I don't bother with physical digital media much anymore.

Hi I'm Luis, I'm 35 years old, I'm from Venezuela and I've been working with software development for approximately 12 years. I've been following @thepracticaldev on Twitter for a while but actually never signed up on this page... because I normally just read but I'm trying to change that

My professional interest are more focused on Backend, SOA, Data Bases and software architecture. Java is by far the language I know better. My experience has been so far with Banks, financial institutions or companies that work with payment related software

Recently I'm exclusively working remote and it has been a great experience. Currently I'm focusing on getting more in contact with the developer community and even planning to create a blog about software development (not sure how or when I'm going to create it, but this year for sure)

I love using twitter, so I got 2 accounts: a more "professional" account (It really is just and account to read and write about developer stuff) twitter.com/ProgramadorVzla

And twitter.com/LM_Santana for any other stuff... I love football (soccer for the gringos out there), progressive rock, sci-fi/fantasy/comic shows/books/movies. I talk mostly in Spanish but I like talking in English... I'm just not that used to it, that's all

I'm married and we have a 4 year old son

That's about everything I can think to introduce myself

Hello Everyone,

My name is Noel and I'm a... I don't really know what I am. I semi-jokingly refer to myself as a "Geek-of-all-trades" because it's the most accurate thing I can come up with! A long-time electronics and code enthusiast, I've worked as electronics tech, industrial automation engineer and Human-Machine Interface developer and 3D graphics developer. Along the way I've developed desktop apps with C++, Java, and C#, innumerable "utility" scripts or programs in Python, Powershell, Bash, VBScript, Perl, TCL, and probably others I'm forgetting. I've also done lots of database work, Excel scripting, and even a bit of web development. These days I'm working mostly on IoT and IIoT projects on both the web and systems side as well as software development and even some hardware and firmware development.

I'm always interested in learning and I'm still an enthusiastic technologist and "gadgeteer" ever after nearly 30 years in the tech industry.

In addition to having too many technical interests, I have too many non-technical ones as well: I train on and race bicycles, play guitar and piano, I have a small music recording studio set up at home, I read a lot, and I love movies.

I'm very new to the dev.to community but so far I really like what I've seen. It's interesting to read about peoples' experiences, thoughts, and opinions in the tech world.

So I am writing a book - self.debug about using mindfulness to become a better software engineer. And I want people to read it (its free to download!), provide feedback and kick off a discussion on how we can leverage emotions and mindfulness to improve ourselves professionally.

I hope to contribute most in career advice, counseling in non technical aspects.

Hello dev.to!

I'm Tim, I'm 43 years old, in the US, and I've been a building software for about 17 years now in many different roles. Most of my work has been in corporate IT shops as either a contractor or FTE. For the past 5 years my role has been somewhat stuck supporting an older, proprietary, and highly specialized ERP. So now I'm working on refreshing my skillset and getting out of my comfort zone.

I found dev.to through Twitter and after lurking for a few weeks, I decided to sign up and participate. This seems like a very supportive community. I hope to contribute content as I work through getting caught up on the latest and greatest. My day job is entirely Microsoft centric in C#/TSQL/Powershell. On my personal projects, I'm working with Node, learning Python, playing with Docker, and trying out Angular and React. I'm still trying to find the best fit. I always gravitate towards backend work and love working with large volumes of data and all of the optimization problems that can entail.

Some non-coding hobbies of mine:

  • Golf (joined a work league several years ago).
  • Strength training (Starting Strength and 5/3/1 style training).

Hi! I'm Thomas and I discovered this site through a recent comment on Hacker News. I looked through some submissions and I liked the breadth of topics and loved the overall tone of the comments.

It's a sad fact that most online communities devolve into let's say less than friendly conversation, but I don't see that here. Even when people disagree it remains friendly and respectful, something I value very highly as it makes for an inclusive community where people aren't afraid to speak.

I'm a truck driver by day so my interest in development and tech is as a hobbyist for now. I don't have anything to show for it but I've challenged myself to start putting together some sort of portfolio so I can do this as a side gig in the future. My main area of focus will be web development, but I will dabble in the open source community for the tools I am using (like VS Code) to broaden my horizons akd to pay it forward.

PS. Great work on this site, I wrote this on mobile and it's virtually indistinguishable from the desktop experience. This is the sort of thing I aspire to make.

Hi folks! I‘m Ikem. I made a programmer course in Python. That course was six months long. I’m into more serious coding for a year now. I must say, I like Python. I‘m now learning Javascript. I like them too. Despite debugging is a bit of a pain in the ass. I have some projects on GitHub. I‘m a fan of the opensource movement. So my projects are opensource too. I‘m a Windows 10/ Linux Mint Debian user. My sympathy goes for Linux. I read a lot. Most is tech related. The rest is about self improvement. Music wise I‘m open to a lot of music. I prefer classic trance from 2010. I‘m not into mainstream music.

Hey dev.to community!

My name is Noah and currently I work as a Linux Engineer. Previously I was employed as a System Developer, working for a company based out of Houston, USA, although I've lived and worked in both the Scotland and the US.

I do development, some DevOps, and I am a massive *nix (Unix/Unix-like) buff. If you have any questions related to *nix (shell scripting, filesystem, permissions, philosophy, etc.), feel free to ask. :)

My current IT interests are Golang and operating system design. Likewise, I am a Free/Libre, Open Source Software, privacy, and security activist.

Outside of work and IT play, I am an avid outdoors fan. I enjoy hiking, kayaking, and climbing, but my main passion is exploring the countryside through cycling. You can also find me playing music (drums, percussion, tin whistle, some didgeridoo, and recently I've picked up the classical guitar).

Hopefully I run into you on Dev.to. Happy hacking.
