The Trouble with Too Many Features

We all know that choosing the right language or framework for a project and team is a difficult but important decision. It can be especially hard when the ecosystem, users or community is still new, small, and the language or framework is being marketed by a large company.

When selecting a language or framework, it's important to watch out for signs that the language or framework may be overly engineered. Here are some of the indicators that you should be aware of:

  1. A steep learning curve. If the language or framework has an excessively steep learning curve, it can take a long time for team members to become familiar with it, increasing the time and effort required to develop an effective solution.

  2. Too many features. A language or framework with too many features can make it difficult to determine which ones are necessary for an effective solution and can also lead to unnecessary complexity.

  3. Naming conventions. Long and very technical naming conventions which can be hard to remember and difficult to comprehend or understand the code specially to newcomers.

  4. Frequent updates and releases with inconsistent APIs. A language or framework that is frequently updated and released with inconsistent APIs can make it difficult to maintain backwards compatibility with existing code.

  5. Unclear documentation. If the language or framework has unhelpful or unclear documentation, it can make it difficult to learn how to use the language or framework effectively.

  6. Poor support. If the language or framework has poor support from the developers, it can make it difficult to resolve any issues that may arise.

By being aware of these signs, you can make sure that the language or framework you choose is the right one for your project and team.
