Introduction

In the past, while using the semantic web technology that Sir Tim Berners-Lee created in 1989, the content was published but users were not given the option to leave comments or make any other kind of input. And at this point, everyone was forced to use Web 1.0, an iteration that only permitted users to read the material.

Thus, Tim O'Reilly helped spread the word about the emergence of Web 2.0 in 2004. The ideology and goals of this movement were centered on social networking, mobile, and cloud initiatives, which facilitated user interaction and gave content creators the freedom to write and publish content with ease.

Wikipedia states that "Web3 was first founded by Ethereum Co-founder Gavin Wood and the idea gained interest in 2021 from cryptocurrency enthusiasts, large technology companies, and venture capital firms.
However, in this article, we'll focus on what web3 is, and know if web3 is a Metaverse, the skills-set in web3, tools used in web3, and finally, talk about where you can learn Web3.

What is Web3 in a nutshell?

Web3 is a new evolution of the internet that runs on a decentralized infrastructure such as blockchains; more open in decision-making and permission-less. It comes with the integration of Ether that transacts value both in finance and digital services, such as storage, bandwidth, and computation without the risks of downtime, interdiction, fraud, or 3rd-party intrusion.
Keynotes:
Open: This is open because web3 is built from an open-source software that allows developers around the world to easily share ideas and collaborate as a community.
Permission-less: it grants both users and suppliers the authorization to carry out any form of activities without government permission.
Ownership: in that, it allows individuals to have full control over their data.

Is Web3 a Metaverse?

Okay, before we get into whether Web3 and Metaverse are the same things, consider the proposed feature that comes with both technologies.

Web3 has the following features:

  • A decentralized system.
  • An open-source application system
  • A new era of the world wide web
  • Ownership over digital assets
  • Permission-less

Metaverse has the following features:

  • A virtual world
  • Digital avatars
  • Decentralization
  • Experiences
  • Creator economy
  • Security
  • Human interface technologies
  • Infrastructure
  • persistence

On the other hand, each technology serves a distinct purpose. Through the use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), social media, and digital currency, the metaverse is a virtual world that the user can access from the real world. While web3, a new development of the web, gives users the ability to read, write, and govern their privacy.

What skill should I learn in Web3?

To become relevant in the new evolution, looked at the skills you should shift focus to and they are:

  • JavaScript Programming
  • Blockchain development
  • Frontend developer
  • Game developer
  • Analyst
  • Content Creator
  • Marketing
  • Data Science
  • Finance
  • Communication skills, etc.

The list is endless, see more.

What are Web3 tools?
There are undoubtedly various tools available in Web3 that you can utilize to complete tasks efficiently. These are the main ones to think about as you go forward in the new era.

  1. Chainstack is used to create web applications, API, games, etc.
  2. WatchData is used to build an API for ensuring the accuracy of data.
  3. Solidity is used to build a smart contracts system.
  4. EtherSpot is a blockchain development framework that takes care of user experience throughout wallets and chains.
  5. Hardhat is used in testing, compiling, deploying, and debugging Ethereum-based Dapps.
  6. Foundry is used to enable functionalities in fuzzing functions during testing.
  7. Ethernal is an open-source block explorer for private chains used to monitor others' development environments.
  8. Metamask is a browser-based blockchain wallet.
  9. Wagmi is a React Hooks that is used for the implementation of interactivity and work on Ethereum-based environments.
  10. NFT.Storage is used for a long-term storage service

Where can I study Web3?

Now that you’ve got a good knowledge of what web3 is all about, let's get to know the right place you can study web3 with ease.
Though, we’ve so many platforms that offer free courses on Web3. Here are some you can consider.

Sites you can learn Web3 courses for free are listed below:

Sites you paid to learn web3:

Conclusion

We've now concluded this earlier article on the introduction to web3, where we discussed the history from web1.0 to web 3.0. Additionally, the features of the metaverse and web3 were highlighted, and a resource platform was offered so that people could study web3 and continue to contribute to the ecosystem.

Since you talk about him, you may be interested to know what the Web inventor thinks about Web3.

Web inventor Tim Berners Lee tells us we can and we should ignore web3 aka blockchain, cryptocurrencies and nonfungible tokens

While (decentralizing the web and) breaking our personal data out of Big Tech’s clutches is an ambition shared by Berners-Lee, he’s not convinced blockchain, the distributed ledger technology that underpins cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, will be the solution.

“It’s a real shame in fact that the actual Web3 name was taken by Ethereum folks for the stuff that they’re doing with blockchain. In fact, Web3 is not the web at all.”

“Blockchain protocols may be good for some things but they’re not good for Solid,” a web decentralization project led by Berners-Lee, he said. “They’re too slow too expensive and too public. Personal data stores have to be fast, cheap and private.”

Thanks for stopping by, and for the recommendation I really appreciate.

To add, I think Web3 isn't fully in operation as Web2; stuff are still on the building process. Moreover, the main purpose of the new evolution is about Metaverse, ownership and decentralization.

I guess my point is that the internet and the web have always been decentralized.

The real issue regarding centralization is that people don't know how to use the web.

They don't use the web, they use Facebook a few other websites from Big Tech monopolies and that's it.

Making everything 10 times more complex with ultra supra security obstacles is not likely to solve that issue.

You're right, because the web isn't limited to social media alone.
