A Passionate Developer's Year in Review: 2020

When I look back over 2020, I find myself with a feeling of accomplishment and excitement about what I have learned, while also being hungry as ever to continue my growth in 2021. The past year saw me dive into two major new technologies, Drupal and React, building on my existing experiences with PHP and VueJS. I also learnt a lot about myself and have a new hunger for self-improvement.

As 2020 began, I ...

  • Started mastering React and Firebase, built a full project using class-based components, then started writing more concise function-based code with React hooks.
  • Jumped into Drupal theming, modules, and created a Docker-based project template. Tackled the notorious learning curve and came out unscathed.

Mid 2020, I ...

  • Relocated to Los Angeles, a place I wanted to live since my first visit in 2009.
  • Attended my first DrupalCon and got involved with Open Source contributions. I met some great people and expanded my professional network in the process.
  • Lost my job. I remained optimistic. I took some time to visit with family, work on my Algorithm skills, and refocus my future career goals.

Now, I ...

  • Continue to learn and grow.
  • Am a maintainer of an Open Source initiative for Drupal.
  • Have rebuilt a simple, static, portfolio website.
  • Have rewritten my Resume after I received some excellent feedback.
  • Moving forward with a positive attitude towards the future, despite a challenging year.

It has been a tough one. Losing a job is a challenge in itself. Losing my job amid a global pandemic is even more challenging. If I am honest, I was not ready for 2020. I had no professional network, a poorly written resume, and a superfluous online portfolio that wasn't clear and focused on content.

I needed to take some steps to search my soul and grow in humility. I have had to learn that I don't need to "go it alone", and that there are many kind and helpful folks who will assist me should I let them.

Thus this is my intention for 2021, that I embrace humility and grow as I have never grown before. This growth I want to bring to my next professional role as I turn turn the page to the next chapter of my life and career.
