Hi, everyone! I'm a senior computer science student and junior developer. I applied some dev jobs and I want to share my experience about why we should apply jobs more often.
Usually people don't apply a job unless they feel enough for the job. But how do you know you're enough good? or if you are on the wrong path, then who will tell you? The best way is applying a job!
If you want a career you basically needs two things: soft and hard skills.
You probably heard some interview questions. "Tell me about yourself, why you choose this career, etc"
Maybe you think you are good at replying for these questions but with excitement you may not.
You need experience to be REALLY good.
For hard skills:
- you will learn how the language/tech used by companies
You can say I know Javascript. But how companies use javascript is different that knowledge.
- you will what should you know
They might ask you some technologies or languages that you do not know. Take note and learn after the interview! So that is how you gain experience from it.
You can take note about the questions that you think you did not answer well.
A list of questions that i remember/love:
- What is your biggest success/failure?
- Why you want to work in that field?
- What is your favorite thing about this language?
- Do you know software development methodologies? (agile)
And my favorite question,
Tell me about yourself.
Tthis is the hardest question for myself. You have to explain yourself as well as possible within two minutes or less.

Applying for jobs helped me a lot with imposter syndrome and getting a real roadmap of what I needed to learn. Once I sent my portfolio, I received feedback on things that I needed to improve and then I learned or improved in those areas. Now I have received several job offers after sending the portfolio. Apply even if you don't feel ready is always a good idea.
