Glam Up My Markup: Winter Solstice

This is a submission for Frontend Challenge - December Edition, Glam Up My Markup: Winter Solstice

What I Built

I built a Winter Solstice website focusing on both usability and code quality. The main page features aurora animation representing winter skies and cultural diversity, and AI-generated poems enhancing the theme. The site includes:

🎨 Design & UI

  • Aurora-inspired animated background
  • Navigation with active section highlighting
  • Responsive layout

🤖 AI Features

  • Winter Solstice poem generator
  • Text-to-speech functionality
  • Serverless API integration

Accessibility

  • WCAG compliant color contrast
  • Keyboard navigation support
  • Screen reader optimization

Journey

This project was a great opportunity to exercise frontend technologies with clean code and better user experience. Here's what I learned:

  1. Back to Basics
Returning to vanilla web technologies from modern frameworks brought fresh perspectives. It reminded me how powerful the basic trio of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript can be.

  2. Creative Solutions

Working with fixed HTML structure was challenging for creating interactive features. As a non-creative person, I leveraged AI assistance to enhance creativity, resulting in unique elements like the poem generator and dynamic content.

  3. Accessibility Insights
Diving into web accessibility opened my eyes to inclusive design principles. Balancing visual appeal with accessibility was challenging, but I learned to make the site more accessible with ARIA labels, while keeping animations smooth with reduced motion settings and GPU acceleration.

Conclusion

This simple project refreshed my knowledge and reinforced frontend fundamentals. I'm excited to apply these learnings to future projects!

Thank you✨
