Perplexity in AI Models: A Simple Explanation

Today I looked up what perplexity is in AI models, and basically, it means what it sounds like, how confused and uncertain is an AI model when trying to predict things?! The higher the perplexity score the less confident the AI is in its prediction.

You've probably heard terms like "accuracy," "precision," and "recall" thrown around when discussing how good a machine learning or AI model is. "Perplexity," a rather uncommon word in everyday conversation, is also an important metric for the AI model. Let's break it down in the simplest way possible.

What is Perplexity?

Imagine you're playing a game of guessing a friend's chosen number between 1 and 10. If you know absolutely nothing about your friend's choice, your perplexity would be 10 because there are 10 possible numbers they could have chosen.

However, if your friend gives a hint that the number is less than 5, your perplexity would drop, since now there are only 4 possible numbers: 1, 2, 3, or 4. The less perplexed you are, the closer you are to the right answer.

In the world of AI, perplexity measures a model's uncertainty. A model with lower perplexity is more sure of its predictions.

Why is it Important in AI?

Perplexity is often used in language models, which are AIs trained to understand and generate human-like text. When such a model is trained on tons of text data, it gets a feel for the structure and patterns of a language.

For example, in the English language, after the word "I am," it's more likely that the next word will be an adjective like "happy" or "sad" rather than a random word like "giraffe." A language model with low perplexity would be good at making such predictions.

Now just because an AI model is confident in its predictions doesn't guarantee their correctness. This confidence stems from extensive training data, and even if the model is mistaken, it still presents its predictions with certainty. In this light, such an AI can be likened to a masterful con-man: entirely convincing because it genuinely believes its own assertions to be true.

In Conclusion

So, if someone made an AI chatbot girlfriend based on me, it'd probably have a high perplexity score, constantly wondering, 'Wait, is this really how the human version behaves?' 🤨

Just as you'd want to be less perplexed when guessing a number or answering a quiz, an AI model with lower perplexity is more confident in its predictions. It's a way to measure how well the model understands the patterns in the data it was trained on. So, next time you hear about perplexity in AI, think of it as the model's version of the classic guessing game, or the AI being a really good con-man, and you better double check the information it gives you.

What would be a use case for a high perplexity model?
