Building an AI Developer Community In NYC

One of my key motivations for joining Microsoft Cloud Advocacy 5 years ago was to explore a career that would allow me to work with communities at scale, to empower a new generation to learn and build with emergent technologies. I learned a lot. From creating learning content that scales, to organizing events that are inclusive and visual stories that engage our audiences. But like everyone, I missed having in-person events and community conversations, and meeting people in my region to learn what they were doing and how we could collaborate. So, when an opportunity came up to help create a new Global AI Community Chapter in New York, with colleagues of mine who were community leaders and technology experts in their own right.

We launched the meetup on November 12 2023 and held our first meetup just a month later. And now, we are days away from our second meetup.

Meetup #1: Prompt Engineering Workshop

The community is for anyone looking to build practical knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning tools and technologies - with application development or entrepreneurship in mind.

Our first meetup kicked things off with an hour-long workshop on Prompt Engineering led by Jasmine Greenaway, with Gwyneth Pena-Siguenza, Ruth Yakubu, and myself, serving as proctors. The workshop walked you through a hands-on series of exercises using an Azure OpenAI endpoint, to understand prompt engineering from core concepts to advanced techniques. We had officially kicked off our AI community adventures!

Meetup #2: Build Copilots & Classify Aircraft

✨ Happens Monday Jan 22 ✨: RSVP HERE

Which brings us to our upcoming Meetup #2 with an interesting aviation theme that we did not expect.

  • Join Microsoft AI Advocate Henk Boelman for a deep dive into Azure AI Studio and show you how you can build end-to-end applications with Large Language Models, from the web-based UI. Learn how you can build a copilot that works with your data to create a differentiated chat AI experience.

  • Next, software engineer John Foster will teach us all about classifiers for computer vision, starting with the mathematical foundation for how they work, then diving into a PyTorch-based demo that uses vision-based classifiers to identify aircraft!

Microsoft AI Tour Comes to NYC!!

✨ Happens Monday Jan 25 ✨: RSVP HERE

Last but not least, we'll have some news and announcements. For instance, did you know the Microsoft AI Tour comes to New York City next week? It's a full day with multiple tracks that combine 45-minute breakout sessions with 75-minute hands-on workshops, to give you a sense for the real-world usage, tools and technologies that you'll need to know, to build the next generation of AI applications. Best of all, it's free to attend but you must register.

The tour is going worldwide, starting in the United States before heading to Australia, India, and more. The New York City event is at Javits Center - so join us!

Your Friendly Meetup Organizers

The meetup is being kicked off by the following folks who happen to be technology experts and community leaders based in NYC. We want to grow and diversify this team with community members - so if you are interested in helping out, just come talk to one of us at the event. And do follow us here to find out more about relevant events in AI/ML in the greater New York region.
