It’s becoming a predictable pattern to share Thorsten’s posts here. What can I do? I like his prose and the content is relevant.
Fundamentals by Mark Seemann
Trying to keep abreast of all new technologies in your field is likely to lead to burnout. Rather, put yourself in a position so that you can quickly learn necessary skills, just in time.
Success isn't guaranteed, but knowing fundamentals increases your chances.
You can learn a particular technology without knowing the fundamentals, but you'll have to put in more time to do that.
…if you're wondering how to invest your limited time so that you can remain up to date, consider pursuing general-purpose knowledge rather than learning a specific technology.
OpenTelemetry from 0 to 100
An interesting read on the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) adoption of OpenTelemetry.
Software engineers are not (and should not be) technicians
I like to use the term “technician” to describe a developer who (A) does work that is well-understood and (B) doesn’t need to leave their comfort zone very often.
No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention
One interesting read (or listening if you’re into audiobooks) about what makes Netflix what it is as an organization.
From my perspective, all of what is written in the book makes a lot of sense and it is enlightening to understand with examples how the company does business. However, it’s not easy or feasible to replicate and shouldn’t be in many cases. You’re not Netflix, beware your context!
A great and entertaining read for sure!
