Coding Grace's March Newsletter is out

It's March, and it's International Women's Day where the month is jam-packed of events, initiatives. Even here on DEV, if you haven't seen it already, you can submit your experience to their annual #SheCoded. I submitted mine so it's your turn if you haven't, plus this year's IWD theme is #ChooseToChallenge.

The newsletter this month is slightly changed, I am focussing more on Diversity in Tech events and other announcements. The general tech listings will now be linked to https://irish-diversity-in-tech.netlify.app/events/ (as the curated listings will be up-to-date)

Of course, we welcome general Irish tech announcements, opportunities, etc., and I will still have a section to do a shoutout in the newsletter.

πŸ“° Here's the newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/3cb35a73a875/cg21-mar-iwd

About GenerationTech

GenerationTech provides a consistent, quality service to the older people of Ireland (defined as those 65 years of age and older) that assists them, on demand, with their technology issues using phone line & digital channels. The scope of this service includes, but is not limited to,help with laptops, smart televisions,WiFi, software, mobile phones and telecommunications.
All services are free of charge and the helpline is currently open Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM. For Saturday and Sunday please leave a message and we will get in touch with you within 24-48 hours).
These opening hours may change to reflect volunteer numbers and demand for the service. Volunteers personal endpoints i.e. PCs, laptops, tablets and mobiles are used to manage these queries.
The Covid-19 Pandemic brought us a new awareness of others, their proximity and their condition. However, there are those that we believe need more support, and more consideration, given their special vulnerability.

There are currently just over 0.75M older people (65+) on the island of Ireland. Whilst a lot believe β€œthe worst is over”, there is still a high degree of risk for our older people, especially those who are not in their fullness of health.

This has led to an increase in the use of modern technologies by older people, as they are very quickly up-skilling themselves with new devices and software. However, like many others, they may hear about, but not have access to, communications software, social media services and more importantly education about how to install and use such devices and software.

Grants/Scholorships

THE EDIE WINDSOR CODING SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Learning how to code is more than education β€” It’s economic opportunity. Our community, like many underrepresented groups, are turning to coding schools because they are more accessible than four-year, computer science degrees.
We named our scholarship after LGBTQ and technology legend, Edie Windsor, to recognize her heroic victory over the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and to celebrate her technical leadership as a computer programming pioneer at IBM. In love and work, Edie Windsor is one of our community’s greatest role models. We want to be a part of telling her story and helping inspire future generations of LGBTQ, technical women and non-binary individuals.
