Understanding MLH and what Local Hack Day: Build is about

Please Note: This is my first ever blog post and I got to know about the existence of MLH in less than a week ago. Construction criticism is most welcome

What is MLH?

MLH stands for Major League Hacking. It is a company that operates a league for student hackathons. This company has an amazing community that makes learning and building fun and really cool!

They have hackathons every week and they also hold some special events like Local Hack Day (there are more events, I just don't know them yet).

What are Guilds?

This community is so huge that it has thousands of people from all over the world! Therefore, they have the concept of guilds. Each guild has a purpose/goal in mind and co-members of the guilds help each other in the challenges. It's an awesome way to deal with such a huge number of people. It's a community inside a community and the members are super-supportive!

What is Local Hack Day?

Local Hack is an event that has 3 formats:

  1. Learn
  2. Build
  3. Share
  • Since I am new to this community, I missed out on the Learn Event, which's the reason I don't know what it is exactly!

  • Build is a place to build as many projects as possible. In the year 2021 (that is now)

2021 Edition

Due to the COVID19 scenario, this event is being held virtually. That means anyone from anywhere in the world can participate! (I live in India so that I benefit from this situation)

During this week, participants get to attend workshops (on many topics: coding in Python, blockchain, AWS and so many more!), daily challenges (where we get new challenges every day and the deadline to solve them is that day!), week-long challenges (the goal is to complete them in the week).

These challenges range from building technical projects to designing logos/outfits. The difficulty level of the technical projects is entirely up to us. We are given a guideline and we are supposed to build on that. We could build something from scratch, watch/read a tutorial or build upon a starter project.

My experience and thoughts

  1. What I really like about this event is the enthusiasm with which the organizers conduct the workshops and fun-events. This event is about learning with enjoying
  2. There was a lot of learning on the go
  3. Since all of us are struggling with similar problems, it's you don't feel demotivated. Stuck somewhere? Ask on the guild. Chances are someone has already figured the problem out and is more than willing to help.
  • Share - Really excited to participate in this in March and know more about it

Conclusion

All in all, I am really excited to participate in this ongoing event (it is Day 4 of 7) and learning/enjoying as much as I can!
