Let's face it, public speaking can be terrifying. Whether it's a team presentation, a conference talk, or even that "introduce yourself" moment at a meetup, the fear of being judged can leave even the most confident developer trying to find the right words.
But public speaking is a powerful skill. It helps you communicate ideas clearly, build confidence, and even advance your career.
Whether it's pitching an idea, presenting at a conference, or simply contributing to a team meeting, the ability to communicate effectively can set you apart.
This April at Virtual Coffee, we're inviting you to step into the spotlight with us for a Public Speaking Monthly Challenge. It's your chance to conquer fears, polish your skills, and maybe even discover a love for public speaking you never knew you had 😉
Why Public Speaking?
The ability to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively is invaluable. (And I'm not just saying this because I was a college English teacher before coming into tech.) Public speaking can help you to develop your brand, broaden your network, and open doors to new opportunities. Plus, it's a great way to contribute to the tech community by sharing insights, lessons learned, and inspirational stories.
What's the Challenge?
Over the course of April, follow along as we work through creating a lightning talk. From selecting your subject to receiving constructive feedback, we're here to support you every step of the way. Here's what we want to achieve together:
- Develop a well-structured and engaging talk.
- Enhance your delivery skills, including pacing, tone, and audience engagement.
- Receive and apply feedback to refine your presentation skills.
Who Can Join?
Whether you're a seasoned speaker or someone who trembles at the thought of an audience, this challenge is for you. Our community is a supportive space for speakers of all levels to learn, grow, and shine.
How Does It Work?
Week by Week Breakdown:
- Week 1: Select your topic and outline your talk.
- Week 2: Develop your talk and begin practicing.
- Week 3: Refine your talk and focus on delivery.
- Week 4: Final preparations and showcase your talk.
Join Us and Let Your Voice Be Heard
This challenge is more than becoming a better speaker. It's about joining a community of learners and sharers, overcoming personal hurdles, and making an impact with your words.
Ready to dive in? Share your goals, progress, and eventually your talk with us on Dev.to using the hashtag #PublicSpeakingChallenge.
Remember, the only way to improve is to start. We can't wait to see where this challenge takes you and hear the incredible talks you'll share. See you in the spotlight!

I have been watching some videos of the latest editions and I found a lot of people and matters that inspired me. I believe I'm ready to present my topic and a brief outline. I'll post about it with #PublicSpeakingChallenge until Saturday.
Thanks for sharing, will serve as a basis for my studies
I love it! Public speaking is one of my weak skills, I'll do my best to improve it
Awesome! We'd love to see you share a video at the end of the month!
Thanks for the support, @bekahhw! That commentary means a lot to me and there is it, the link to my presentation to the Public Speaking Challenge: A briefing introduction about Linux to novices and beginners
I'll do my best!
I want to join, you ready.?
Let's do this!
That sounds cool, but I don't really understand what it means in practice to "join the challenge"
You can follow along with us, check out our Lightning talks when they go live, and post a link to your own lightning talk at the end of the month.
