Write a function that converts a given Roman numeral into an integer. Roman numerals are represented by seven different symbols: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M with values 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000, respectively. Consider subtraction rules as well, like IV is 4, IX is 9, etc.
